What is the Jacaranda Festival?

The Jacaranda Festival which is held in Grafton, New South Wales is an annual festival that celebrates the city’s beautiful Jacaranda trees. The Festival is held for around 10 to 16 days each year from late October to early November, to coincide with the Jacaranda trees in full bloom.

The Jacaranda Festival showcases the unique, the quirky and the beautiful through music, food, dance, art and our stunning Jacaranda trees. It’s a time for people to experience, in all its diversity, everything that is great about the Australian regional lifestyle. The Grafton Jacaranda Spirit represents inclusiveness, and the Festival was always intended to be a shared experience between locals and our guests – the celebration of the Jacaranda trees.

The Festival originally began as an idea to attract tourists and visitors to Grafton in the early 1900s and was first officially held in 1935. The first Jacaranda Festival took place over 2 nights in Pound Street, Grafton and included Maypole Dancing, a Float Parade and Community Singing and Dancing.

Over the decades the Festival has always been a reflection of the culture and the expectations of society at the time. Throughout the years featured events have included Sacred Concerts, Candlelight Vigils, Raft Races, School Displays, Rodeos, Floral Window Displays, Bathub Regattas and Community Dancing.

The program of activities has evolved over the years and now also features Sporting and Cultural Events. In addition, community based Craft Groups, Markets and Organisations also join in to showcase their skills and passions throughout the wonderful purple week of festivities.
